The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has assured Nigerians that security agencies are working to secure the release of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar and his wife following their abduction by suspected bandits in Katsina State.
Major General Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, and his wife were reportedly kidnapped along the Katsina–Matazu Road in Matazu Local Government Area while travelling to Katsina.
Reports indicate that their driver sustained gunshot injuries during the attack but managed to escape, while the retired military officer and his wife were taken away by the gunmen.
Reacting to the incident, military authorities said security operatives have launched coordinated search-and-rescue operations to locate the victims and apprehend the perpetrators. The Defence Headquarters assured the public that efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe return of the abducted couple.
The Katsina State Police Command also confirmed the incident, stating that tactical units and other security personnel have been deployed to comb the area and track down the kidnappers.
According to the police, the attackers intercepted the victims’ vehicle before whisking them away to an unknown destination.The abduction has renewed concerns over the persistent security challenges facing northwestern Nigeria, where communities continue to grapple with kidnappings, banditry, and violent attacks despite ongoing military operations.
Major General Abubakar served as Director of Defence Information between 2015 and 2017 and remains a respected figure within military and security circles.
His abduction has attracted widespread concern from security experts, civil society groups, and members of the public.
As security agencies intensify rescue efforts, Nigerians continue to call for stronger measures to address the growing threat of banditry and kidnapping across the country.
