Tension rose in Enugu on Tuesday as teachers under the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) stormed the Enugu State Government House to demand the immediate release of colleagues and students abducted in Oyo State.
The protest forms part of a nationwide solidarity action triggered by the mass abduction of pupils and teachers from schools in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, an incident that has sparked anger, school closures, and demonstrations across several states.
According to reports, the teachers carried placards and chanted solidarity songs while calling on government authorities to intensify rescue operations and strengthen security in schools, especially in rural communities where repeated attacks have been recorded.
The demonstration comes amid growing outrage within the education sector, following the reported abduction of dozens of pupils and several teachers during coordinated attacks on schools, which has left families and communities in fear and uncertainty.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers had earlier directed members in Oyo State to embark on an indefinite strike, while also mobilising nationwide rallies to pressure authorities into securing the release of abducted victims and improving school safety.
Teachers in several states have since joined solidarity actions, warning that continued attacks on schools are making learning environments unsafe and disrupting academic activities across affected regions.
Security agencies have continued search and rescue operations, while the Federal Government has pledged intensified efforts, including deployment of specialised security teams and additional forest security personnel to vulnerable areas.
