The Senate has called on the Federal Government and all relevant security agencies to intensify rescue efforts and deploy every available resource to secure the release of schoolchildren, teachers, and other victims abducted by gunmen in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, representing Oyo North Senatorial District, who drew the attention of lawmakers to the abduction of pupils, teachers, and a toddler from schools and communities in the affected area. The Senate condemned the incident and expressed sympathy with the victims’ families, affected communities, and the Oyo State Government.
Lawmakers also urged the Federal Government to strengthen and expand the Safe Schools Initiative through enhanced surveillance, improved intelligence gathering, and increased security deployment around vulnerable schools and communities nationwide.
During deliberations, several senators expressed concern over the persistent wave of insecurity affecting educational institutions and rural communities across the country. They stressed the need for greater accountability, improved oversight of security spending, and stronger coordination among security agencies in combating kidnappings, banditry, and terrorism.
The Senate further observed a minute of silence in honour of victims who lost their lives during recent attacks and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting measures aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.
The appeal comes amid growing national concern over recent school abductions in Oyo and other parts of the country, with stakeholders calling for more effective security measures to protect schools, students, and teachers from criminal attacks.
