OccupyAsoRock Protest: U.S. Embassy Issues Security Alert to Citizens

U.S. Embassy Issues Travel Advisory Ahead of #OccupyAsoRock Protest

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security advisory to American citizens ahead of the planned #OccupyAsoRock protest scheduled to take place in Abuja.

In the advisory, the embassy urged U.S. citizens to exercise caution, avoid areas where demonstrations are expected to occur, and monitor local media for updates regarding the protest and any associated security developments.

The embassy noted that public demonstrations, even when peaceful, can sometimes lead to disruptions, road closures, traffic congestion, and unforeseen security incidents. It therefore advised American nationals to remain vigilant, review their personal security plans, and avoid large gatherings.

The advisory comes amid growing public attention surrounding the planned protest, which organisers say is intended to draw attention to issues including insecurity, economic hardship, governance concerns, and other challenges facing Nigerians.

The U.S. Embassy further encouraged its citizens to keep mobile devices charged, carry proper identification, and maintain communication with family members and relevant authorities where necessary.

Travel advisories are routinely issued by foreign missions ahead of major political events, public demonstrations, and periods of heightened tension as part of efforts to keep their citizens informed of potential risks.

As of the time of filing this report, Nigerian authorities had not issued any official response to the embassy’s advisory.
