The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has increased its crude oil processing capacity to 700,000 barrels per day (bpd), surpassing its official nameplate capacity of 650,000 bpd following a performance test conducted by its process licensors.
The company said the milestone reflects improved operational efficiency and the refinery’s ability to handle additional feedstock while optimising output across its production units.
According to the Vice President for Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, the development forms part of a broader strategy aimed at expanding the refinery’s capacity to 1.4 million bpd within the next 30 months, positioning it among the largest refineries globally.
The refinery, which commenced operations in 2024, has been steadily ramping up production of petrol, diesel, and jet fuel for both domestic consumption and export markets. The increased output has also attracted growing interest from international crude suppliers and commodity traders.
Looking ahead, the company said the expansion plan is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s energy self-sufficiency, reduce dependence on imported refined products, and reinforce the country’s position as a regional fuel hub.
Aliko Dangote has also outlined long-term plans to further scale up refining capacity beyond the current expansion phase, reflecting broader ambitions to establish the facility as a major global refining centre.
