Court Adjourns Emeka Ike’s ₦10 Billion Suit Against Wike’s Aide Until July 22

A Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned until July 22, 2026, the ₦10 billion fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by Nollywood actor and politician Emeka Ike against Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Justice Salim Ibrahim granted the adjournment following an application by Emeka Ike’s counsel, Leonard (L.T.) Adeh, who requested more time to enable INEC, the second respondent, to appear before the court after failing to attend the proceedings despite being served with hearing notices.

During the hearing, Adeh informed the court that Lere Olayinka had already filed and served his response to the suit and that the plaintiff would file a reply to the counter-affidavit. Counsel to Olayinka, Akpama Ekwe, did not oppose the request for adjournment but argued that the matter could proceed even without INEC’s appearance. The court, however, held that a short adjournment was necessary in the interest of fair hearing.

The suit stems from allegations that Olayinka unlawfully published Emeka Ike’s confidential voter registration details on his X (formerly Twitter) account after the actor contested the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency House of Representatives primary election. Ike argues that the publication violated his constitutional right to privacy and the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, and is seeking ₦10 billion in damages, a public apology, and the removal of the post.

The court also directed that INEC be served with fresh hearing notices and all relevant court processes ahead of the next sitting scheduled for July 22, 2026.
