Andy Burnham has officially become the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister after meeting King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, where the monarch invited him to form a new government following the resignation of Keir Starmer. Burnham accepted the invitation and assumed office as Britain’s 59th Prime Minister.
Burnham’s appointment follows Labour’s internal leadership transition after Starmer stepped down. Before entering Downing Street, Burnham held the traditional audience with King Charles III, in keeping with British constitutional convention under which the monarch formally appoints the individual most likely to command the confidence of the House of Commons.
In his first remarks as Prime Minister, Burnham pledged to provide stable leadership and outlined plans to pursue a programme centred on national renewal, public services and regional development. He is also expected to announce a new Cabinet as his administration begins work on its legislative and economic agenda.
Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, assumes office at a time when the United Kingdom continues to face significant economic, social and geopolitical challenges, including pressures on public services, the cost of living, regional inequality and international security.
