United States President Donald Trump has reaffirmed his administration’s support for Nigeria’s efforts to combat terrorism, telling President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that it is “an honour” to stand with his government in the fight against violent extremist groups. The message came in a letter dated July 6, 2026, in which Trump also commended Tinubu’s commitment to addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, particularly the violence affecting Christian communities.
According to the letter, Trump said relations between the United States and Nigeria had strengthened in recent years through closer cooperation on security matters. He praised Tinubu’s resolve to confront terrorism and expressed Washington’s readiness to continue supporting efforts aimed at restoring peace and protecting vulnerable communities.
The development follows growing security cooperation between both countries, as Nigeria continues military operations against insurgent and terrorist groups operating in parts of the country. While the U.S. administration highlighted attacks on Christian communities, Nigerian authorities have consistently maintained that insecurity affects citizens across religious and ethnic lines and requires a unified national and international response.
