Nigerian music icon Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo, popularly known as D’banj, has become the first Nigerian entertainer to ring the closing bell at the London Stock Exchange (LSE), marking a significant milestone for Nigeria’s creative industry on the global stage.
The award-winning singer participated in the ceremony on Wednesday as part of activities commemorating the 125th anniversary of the Royal African Society, one of the United Kingdom’s oldest institutions dedicated to promoting engagement with Africa through culture, business, education and public policy.
Reflecting on the historic moment, D’banj described the invitation as a great honour, saying the occasion brought together influential figures from politics, finance and business to celebrate Africa’s growing global influence.
“History was made. I was invited to the London Stock Exchange to ring the closing bell as we celebrate 125 years of the Royal African Society,” the entertainer wrote on his verified social media account.
The ceremony was attended by several prominent personalities, including the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, President of Afreximbank, Prof. Benedict Oramah, Chairperson of the Royal African Society, Arunma Oteh, Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group, Dr Umaru Kwairanga, and Oando Group Chief Executive, Wale Tinubu.
D’banj’s participation highlights the increasing global recognition of Nigerian entertainment and the broader African creative economy. Over the past two decades, Nigerian musicians have emerged as major cultural ambassadors, expanding the international reach of Afrobeats and strengthening Africa’s influence across music, business and global popular culture.
