As the world commemorates World Environment Day 2026, Greenwaves Environmental Consult, through its climate advocacy platform Greenwaves Climate Action, has launched the “50 Cities at 50°C” Campaign, a global awareness and action initiative aimed at drawing urgent attention to the escalating urban heat crisis threatening millions of people across the world.
The campaign comes amid growing scientific evidence that climate change is pushing temperatures to unprecedented levels, with several cities across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and parts of the Americas increasingly recording temperatures approaching or exceeding 50°C. Climate experts warn that if current greenhouse gas emissions continue unchecked, dozens more cities could regularly experience such extreme temperatures within the coming decades.
According to Greenwaves Climate Action, the climate emergency is no longer a future threat but a present reality affecting public health, food security, water resources, biodiversity, infrastructure, and economic productivity.
“The world is witnessing a dangerous climate threshold. What was once considered rare and extreme is becoming increasingly common. The prospect of 50 cities experiencing temperatures of 50°C is not a distant prediction; it is a warning sign of the climate future we are rapidly approaching,” the organisation stated.
The campaign seeks to mobilise governments, environmental institutions, civil society organisations, youth groups, researchers, and local communities to accelerate climate adaptation and mitigation measures while strengthening public understanding of the risks associated with extreme heat.
Greenwaves Climate Action noted that extreme temperatures have already contributed to rising cases of heat-related illnesses, crop failures, water scarcity, displacement, and environmental degradation in many regions. Vulnerable populations, including children, older persons, outdoor workers, low-income communities, and people with existing health conditions, remain disproportionately affected.
In Nigeria, climate-related disasters continue to intensify. Communities across the country are facing recurring floods, desertification, erosion, prolonged droughts, heatwaves, and biodiversity loss. Northern states are particularly vulnerable to rising temperatures, while coastal regions face increasing threats from flooding and sea-level rise.
The organisation stressed that urban centres are becoming climate hotspots due to rapid urbanisation, deforestation, poor planning, loss of green spaces, and increasing carbon emissions. Cities often experience the “urban heat island effect,” where built-up areas absorb and retain more heat than surrounding rural environments, making extreme temperatures even more dangerous.
As part of the “50 Cities at 50°C” Campaign, Greenwaves Climate Action is calling for the expansion of urban forests, investment in renewable energy, sustainable transportation systems, climate-resilient infrastructure, improved waste management, and stronger enforcement of environmental regulations. The organisation also advocates for increased climate education and public participation in environmental decision-making.
The campaign further urges governments to honour their commitments under international climate agreements, including the Paris Agreement, and to prioritise climate adaptation funding for vulnerable communities facing the greatest risks.
Greenwaves Climate Action emphasised that climate justice must remain central to global climate responses, noting that many of the communities suffering the worst impacts of climate change have contributed the least to the crisis.
This year’s World Environment Day serves as a reminder that environmental protection and climate action are inseparable from sustainable development, public health, and social justice. The organisation called on citizens across the world to become active participants in protecting the environment through responsible consumption, tree planting, waste reduction, environmental advocacy, and support for climate-friendly policies.
