The Emir of Yashikira in Kwara State has alleged that police officers abandoned their positions and fled during the recent terrorist attack on the community, allowing the assailants to seize rifles left behind before launching a full-scale assault on the emirate.
According to the traditional ruler, the attackers reportedly overpowered local security personnel during the raid, took possession of abandoned weapons, and used their superior firepower to intensify the attack on the palace and surrounding areas. The incident formed part of a deadly operation that left properties destroyed and several residents abducted.
The attack on Yashikira sent shockwaves across Kwara State after armed men reportedly invaded the community, set parts of the Emir’s palace ablaze, and abducted members of the royal household as well as other residents. Authorities had earlier confirmed that the attackers also targeted the local police divisional headquarters during the coordinated assault.
The Emir’s allegations have heightened concerns over the preparedness and effectiveness of security forces confronting increasingly sophisticated terrorist groups operating in parts of Nigeria’s North-Central region. Community leaders have repeatedly warned that armed groups are exploiting inadequate security presence, difficult terrain, and intelligence gaps to carry out attacks on vulnerable rural communities.
The claims are also expected to reignite debate over the official account of the incident, particularly as previous police statements maintained that officers successfully resisted the attack on the police facility.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kwara State Police Command had not publicly responded to the Emir’s allegations. Meanwhile, security operations aimed at rescuing abducted victims and tracking down the attackers are said to be ongoing.
