Nigeria Immigration Service Deploys Technology to Curb Irregular Migration

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has intensified efforts to combat irregular migration through the deployment of modern technology aimed at strengthening border security and improving monitoring of cross-border movements.

According to Vanguard, the initiative is part of ongoing reforms to enhance surveillance systems, improve data tracking, and reduce illegal migration networks operating across Nigeria’s borders.

The Service noted that the use of advanced digital tools is expected to strengthen intelligence gathering and improve coordination between border control units in detecting and preventing unauthorized movement of persons.

Officials said the technological upgrade aligns with broader government efforts to modernise the country’s immigration system, especially in response to increasing concerns over human trafficking, smuggling, and irregular migration routes across West Africa.

The NIS also reiterated its commitment to safeguarding national borders while ensuring that legitimate migration processes remain efficient and secure.

The move comes amid wider federal reforms in the security and migration sector, including digital identity systems, enhanced border monitoring infrastructure, and inter-agency collaboration to address transnational crime.

Authorities say the reforms are expected to improve operational efficiency and reduce the risks associated with porous borders, which have long been identified as a challenge to national security.
