Reps Summon Service Chiefs, Finance Minister Over Rising Security Spending

The House of Representatives has summoned Nigeria’s service chiefs and the Minister of Finance over concerns surrounding rising security expenditure and the need for greater accountability in the management of security funds.

According to Vanguard, the lawmakers issued the summons following growing public concern over escalating security spending amid persistent insecurity across the country, including banditry, kidnappings and terrorism-related incidents.

The House Committee is expected to engage top security officials and financial authorities to provide detailed explanations on how funds allocated for national security are being utilised, as well as clarify operational challenges facing security agencies.

Lawmakers reportedly expressed concern that despite increased budgetary allocations to security over the years, insecurity remains a major national challenge, with frequent attacks in several regions.

The session is also expected to address issues relating to transparency, procurement processes, and the effectiveness of current security spending in delivering measurable results.

The development comes amid broader calls for reform of Nigeria’s security architecture, including improved oversight, intelligence coordination, and accountability mechanisms.

Further legislative actions are expected after the engagement with the summoned officials.
