The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted ₦5 million bail to social media commentator and politician Garus Gololo, who is facing trial over allegations of cybercrime, cyberstalking, defamation, and incitement linked to alleged statements about Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia admitted Gololo to bail in the sum of ₦5 million with one surety in like sum. The court ruled that the surety must be a Grade Level 12 officer in the Federal Civil Service. The case was subsequently adjourned until September 22, 2026, for the continuation of trial.
Gololo was arraigned by the Nigeria Police Force on a seven-count charge after allegedly publishing a viral video and Facebook posts claiming that Senate President Akpabio said northerners must support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 or risk being expelled from Nigeria, and that “with or without the North, Tinubu would win.”
The Office of the Senate President denied making the alleged remarks, describing them as false, malicious, and capable of inciting public tension. The office also called on security agencies to investigate Gololo and prosecute those responsible for spreading the claims.
Gololo has pleaded not guilty to all charges and will remain on bail pending the continuation of proceedings.
