Former Special Investigator to the Presidency, Jim Obazee, has called for the prosecution of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, over his alleged role in the controversial $6.23 million withdrawn from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in 2023. The recommendation forms part of Obazee’s submissions following his investigation into the alleged fraud.

According to Obazee, the ongoing trial involving former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele should be expanded to include other individuals allegedly connected to the disputed transaction. He argued that available evidence points to the need for a broader prosecution to establish accountability for the release and handling of the funds.

The alleged $6.23 million was reportedly withdrawn from the CBN under the guise of funding foreign election observer missions, a transaction that has remained at the centre of multiple criminal proceedings involving Emefiele and other suspects. Recent court proceedings have also heard testimony that Emefiele did not personally benefit from the funds, although questions remain over the approval process and the roles played by various public officials.

Obazee urged the Federal Government to ensure that all individuals found to have played a role in the alleged diversion or unlawful release of public funds are prosecuted, stressing that accountability should extend beyond a single defendant.
