Nigeria Considers Retaliatory Measures Over Xenophobic Attacks on Citizens in South Africa — FG

The Federal Government has indicated that it may consider retaliatory measures against South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians and other foreign nationals in the country.

According to Vanguard, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, said retaliatory options were not entirely off the table as the government weighs its response to the growing attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa. She noted that any such decision would require consideration at the highest levels of government and the legislature.

The minister also disclosed that plans to repatriate Nigerians willing to return home had experienced delays due to documentation and screening processes being conducted in collaboration with South African authorities. The exercise involves over 1,000 Nigerians who have registered for possible evacuation amid rising tensions.

The development comes as diplomatic pressure mounts on South Africa over reports of attacks, harassment, and displacement of foreign nationals. Several African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Malawi, and Mozambique, have taken steps to assist affected citizens, while South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has pledged action against groups linked to xenophobic violence.

Despite growing calls for economic retaliation, some policy and economic analysts have cautioned against actions that could harm bilateral relations or negatively impact businesses and jobs in both countries. They have instead advocated sustained diplomatic engagement and stronger measures to protect the lives and rights of migrants.

Nigeria has repeatedly condemned xenophobic attacks in South Africa, insisting that the safety and dignity of its citizens abroad must be protected while diplomatic efforts continue to address the recurring crisis.
