The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South-West Zone D, has called for the temporary closure of tertiary institutions across Osun State ahead of the forthcoming governorship election, citing growing security concerns and rising incidents of political violence.

In a statement, the student body expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in parts of the state, warning that students could become unintended victims if academic activities continue during the election period. NANS urged the Federal Government, the Osun State Government, security agencies and relevant educational authorities to prioritise the safety of students by suspending academic activities until after the poll.

The association said its demand was driven solely by the need to protect lives and prevent avoidable casualties, stressing that students should not be exposed to the risks associated with election-related violence and political tension. It also appealed to security agencies to intensify efforts to ensure a peaceful, free and credible election across the state.

The call comes amid increasing concerns over reports of clashes between political supporters and heightened tensions ahead of the 15 August 2026 Osun State governorship election. Civil society organisations and election observers have also urged political actors to avoid inflammatory rhetoric and ensure that the electoral process remains peaceful.

Although no decision has yet been announced by the relevant authorities regarding the proposed closure of campuses, the development has renewed debate over balancing students’ safety with the need to minimise disruption to academic activities during major elections.
