The Labour Party in Abia State has concluded its governorship and legislative primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Governor Alex Otti emerging as the party’s consensus governorship candidate.
The primaries, held in Umuahia, also produced Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe as the Labour Party candidate for Abia South Senatorial District, alongside other candidates for the National Assembly and State House of Assembly seats.
According to the party’s Returning Officer, Mrs. Oluchi Opara, the exercise was conducted across wards in the state in line with the Labour Party constitution and electoral guidelines, with broad participation from party members.
Governor Otti was returned unopposed as the governorship candidate after securing overwhelming endorsement in what party officials described as a consensus arrangement.Senator Abaribe, a long-serving federal lawmaker representing Abia South, also clinched the party’s senatorial ticket, positioning him for another electoral contest under the Labour Party platform.
Other candidates were similarly elected to fly the party’s flag for House of Representatives and State Assembly seats, completing the party’s lineup for the 2027 general elections in the state.
Party leaders described the primaries as peaceful and well-organized, noting that the outcome reflected unity and consolidation within the Labour Party ahead of the polls.
The development further strengthens the Labour Party’s position in Abia State, where it currently controls the governorship under Governor Otti.
