Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has strongly criticised the Nigerian Police Force, accusing it of abandoning its constitutional responsibilities and operating as a tool for powerful individuals after a teenager was reportedly remanded by a court over allegations of defaming businessman Tony Elumelu.

Sowore described the development as another troubling example of how law enforcement agencies are allegedly being used to protect elite interests while ordinary Nigerians continue to struggle for justice and protection.

Reacting to the court’s decision, the activist argued that security agencies have increasingly shifted their focus from tackling serious crimes and protecting citizens to pursuing cases that primarily serve influential figures in society. He warned that such actions raise concerns about the state of justice, freedom of expression, and equal treatment under the law in Nigeria.

According to reports, the teenager was remanded following allegations linked to defamatory statements said to have been made against Elumelu, a prominent businessman and chairman of major corporate institutions in the country. The incident has since sparked debate over the use of police resources in matters involving powerful personalities.

Sowore maintained that the growing perception that law enforcement agencies are selectively deployed against critics, activists, and ordinary citizens threatens public confidence in democratic institutions. He argued that the police should focus on addressing insecurity, violent crimes, kidnappings, and other pressing challenges affecting millions of Nigerians rather than becoming instruments in personal or elite-driven disputes.

The activist further warned that the continued use of state institutions in ways perceived as favouring the wealthy and politically connected could deepen public frustration and widen distrust in the justice system.

The controversy has reignited discussions around citizens’ rights, the limits of free expression, and the role of law enforcement agencies in a democratic society, with many observers calling for greater accountability and impartiality in the handling of sensitive cases involving influential individuals.
