Post-Primary Chaos Worsens as INEC Fixes Candidates’ Submission Deadline

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed strict deadlines for the submission of candidates’ details by political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, amid growing post-primary disputes and internal crises across several parties.

According to The Punch, the development comes as many political parties struggle to resolve disagreements emerging from their recently concluded primaries, with factions contesting outcomes and negotiating candidate lists ahead of submission to the electoral body.

INEC’s timetable indicates that political parties must conclude internal disputes and upload the particulars of their nominated candidates within a defined window, as the commission moves to enforce compliance with the Electoral Act governing election timelines.

The electoral body has repeatedly maintained that strict adherence to deadlines is necessary to ensure proper planning, reduce litigation bottlenecks, and prevent last-minute disruptions to the electoral process.

Political analysts say the current wave of internal party conflicts reflects long-standing weaknesses in party structures, where candidate selection processes often trigger legal battles, defections, and factional struggles.

The situation has intensified pressure on party leaderships, many of whom are now racing to reconcile rival blocs and finalise names before INEC’s portal deadlines close.

INEC, however, insists it will not shift statutory deadlines except where legally required, warning that failure by parties to comply could result in exclusion of candidates from the electoral process.

The commission is expected to continue monitoring party compliance as preparations for the 2027 elections advance.
