Rights Group Demands Police Obey Court Order, Pay ₦50 Million Compensation to Family of Slain Journalist Alex Ogbu

A rights advocacy group has called on the Nigeria Police Force to immediately comply with a court judgment awarding ₦50 million compensation to the family of late journalist Alex Ogbu, who was killed while covering a protest in Abuja.

According to reports, the group accused the police of failing to obey a lawful court order several years after judgment was delivered in favour of the slain journalist’s family. The campaigners argued that the continued refusal to implement the ruling undermines public confidence in the justice system and reinforces a culture of impunity.

Alex Ogbu, a journalist and activist, was killed in January 2020 while covering a protest by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) in Abuja. Following legal action by activists and supporters, a court subsequently ruled that the killing was unlawful and ordered the Nigeria Police Force to pay ₦50 million in damages to his family.

The advocacy group maintained that justice remains incomplete until the court judgment is fully implemented, stressing that compliance with judicial decisions is essential for the rule of law and accountability.

The group also renewed calls for accountability over attacks on journalists and urged authorities to ensure that media professionals can carry out their duties without fear of violence or intimidation.

The development has once again drawn attention to concerns over press freedom, human rights, and the enforcement of court judgments in Nigeria.
