Tension Reportedly Erupts in Kuje Prison as Inmates Protest Planned Transfer of Terror Suspects

Tension reportedly gripped the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja following protests by inmates over plans to transfer hundreds of terrorism suspects to the facility, according to an exclusive report by Sahara Reporters.

The report alleged that inmates expressed concerns about overcrowding and deteriorating conditions within the correctional centre, fearing that the proposed transfer of approximately 300 terror suspects could further strain available facilities and resources.

Sources cited in the report claimed that some inmates staged protests within the facility, raising concerns over accommodation, welfare, and security implications associated with the planned relocation of the suspects.

The development comes amid ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to prosecute hundreds of individuals facing terrorism-related charges as part of broader counter-terrorism operations across the country.

Kuje Prison has remained a facility of national security significance since the 2022 attack that resulted in the escape of hundreds of inmates, including terror suspects, raising longstanding concerns about prison security, congestion, and the management of high-risk detainees.

As of the time of reporting, correctional authorities had not publicly issued a detailed response to the allegations contained in the report.
