United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) has unveiled an ambitious expansion strategy aimed at strengthening its position in Nigeria’s aviation industry and expanding into international markets, following the acquisition of two Boeing 737-800NG aircraft. The airline says the move reflects its long-term commitment to growth, operational excellence, and global competitiveness.
The newly acquired aircraft were officially unveiled at Nesto Aviation Services (NESTAV) in Lagos and named after the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, and the late literary icon Professor Chinua Achebe, in recognition of their contributions to Nigerian history, culture, and national identity.
Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, described the acquisition as part of the airline’s long-term vision to expand its fleet and improve connectivity. He also reflected on the airline’s resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic and reaffirmed its commitment to contributing to the growth of Nigeria’s aviation sector.
The airline also announced its admission into the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Multilateral Interline Traffic Agreement (MITA), a development expected to enable code-sharing and interline partnerships with international carriers, offering passengers smoother global travel connections through a single ticketing system.
As part of its next phase of growth, United Nigeria Airlines disclosed plans to commence international operations to destinations including Douala, Libreville, Johannesburg, London, New York, Canada, Dubai, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, subject to regulatory approvals and additional aircraft deliveries.
The expansion reflects increasing competition within Nigeria’s aviation industry as indigenous airlines seek to expand regional and international operations while strengthening the country’s presence in the global air transport market.
