A United States federal court has scheduled the trial of Venezuela’s ousted President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, to begin on June 1, 2027, following their not guilty pleas to federal drug trafficking and firearms-related charges. The trial date was fixed by Judge Alvin Hellerstein of the U.S. District Court in Manhattan, with a series of pre-trial hearings expected before proceedings commence.
According to U.S. prosecutors, Maduro and Flores face charges linked to an alleged conspiracy to facilitate large-scale cocaine trafficking into the United States. The couple has denied all allegations, while their legal team is expected to challenge both the charges and the legality of Maduro’s capture, arguing that he is entitled to sovereign immunity under international law.
